Dear Colleague

Welcome to Insights, Instro's newsletter for Spring 2010.

Instro addressed the challenges of the global economic crisis by focussing efforts on bringing new products through to market and developing our production facilities to improve our efficiency in addressing customers’ evolving needs.

New production cells were established for-

  • ROSS (Remote Observation Support System):
Allowing observers to carry out surveillance missions whilst safely under cover.
  • LRF100 Series:
The lightest weight 2.5Km LRF OEM module available.
  • Thor Targeting System:
State of the art, accurate, lightweight target acquisition systems for dismounted forces.

A 5S initiative, adopted enthusiastically by the production team, has yielded significant improvements in workplace organisation and production effectiveness.

With the green shoots of spring and hopefully an economic recovery appearing, we would be delighted if you would take a few moments to complete our on line Customer Satisfaction Survey, and let us have your thoughts. As an incentive, we will enter your reply into a prize draw. The winner, selected at random on the 1st of July will receive a 'Samsung N130 netbook'.

Best regards John

John Morcom, Managing Director

ROSS Production Cell

Instro recently completed a dedicated production cell for the ROSS (Remote Observation Support System).

The cell forms an essential part of Instro's plan for continuous improvement and includes dedicated test facilities enabling system test and processing to be conducted efficiently.

The ROSS production cell has been carefully designed to cope with the anticipated increase in system sales over the next two to five years.

The Completion of the cell coincides with significant production orders for this year.

Hornet HS (High Speed)

The Hornet HS (High Speed) provides significantly higher axis speeds whilst maintaining the same form factor as the original Hornet.

Instro's lightest and most compact motorised pan and tilt unit is becoming increasingly popular with prime contractors in the business of remote target acquisition and dismounted surveillance.

The Hornet forms part of the Instro ROSS (Remote Observation Support System) and so benefits from Instro's new ROSS production cell concept of manufacture.

LRF100 Series 'The lightest OEM LRF module'

The latest LRF100 series laser range finder module is the lightest weight 2.5Km LRF OEM module available at just 110g. This coupled with a compact size of just 92 x 50 x 25mm (not much bigger than a packet of cigarettes) make it an ideal choice for integration into compact and hand held sensors.

The clever design is based around a super lightweight aluminium chassis and allows for mounting in a number of orientations to suit the intended application.

THOR Targeting System

THOR was originally developed to support the new generation of SMART sensors which use the very accurate angular data derived from THOR to calculate target coordinates.

Due to the popularity of THOR and in no small measure from customer enquiries Instro has pushed forward with the development of the THOR Targeting System.

  • THOR goniometer
  • Tripod
  • TCD (Thor computing device)
  • Targeting software package
  • Connecting cables
The Thor targeting system is extremely versatile and allows for precise customer configuration from a wide range of options. This attention to detail provides the end-user with a seamless target acquisition solution that has a custom feel but with a cots/mots price tag.

5S Initiative

Instro's 5S program began midway through 2009 and focuses on having visual order, organization, cleanliness and standardisation of the workplace and all things in it.

  1. SORT
  2. SET
  3. SHINE
  4. STANDARDISATION
  5. SUSTAIN

All departments have embraced the concept and report a marked improvement in efficiency.

As with many manufacturing philosophies, 5S originated within Toyota in Japan.
